I have always been a baseball guy. My dad got me started with YMCA baseball almost fifteen years ago, and ever since then I have been addicted to the game. Now that I look back on the days when I actually played baseball, I find it amazing how my life revolved around the game. I no longer had to plan my day around baseball games and baseball practices. Although I played baseball as a way to pass the time, I met some of my closest friends while playing, and that is what I missed most. I wanted to find a way back into the game.
After high school baseball, I chose academics over sports, and I have no regrets over my decision. I had a few offers to play, but I wanted to play somewhere where I could major in something that I wanted to study, and the right offer never came along. I played baseball for the Houston Power Baseball organization for about five years. That is where I officially ended my baseball career. However, this is where I officially re-began my baseball career. I was offered an assistant coaching position on a 16 and under baseball team. At first, I was unsure about how the kids would treat me. I wondered if they would respect and listen to me. I am only 18 years old, and I could potentially pass as a 16 year old player. Fortunately for me, I had the credentials necessary to garner their respect. I have varsity high school baseball experience, and many of the players on the team have yet to reach that point in their careers. Now, I have made new friends and I don’t have to worry about if they will call me “coach” anymore.

Baseball is a fun game to play and I can see how you can become addicted to it, however it is very time consuming and it seems like the season goes on forever. You have to really love the game to stick with it for so long.

Yes, a baseball season is very long compared to most other sports, and it can be played throughtout the year. However, baseball has been in my life for as long as I can remember, so I actually enjoy the lenghty season.

Very cool that you were able to continue baseball by being a coach. I'm sure your coaches had an influence in your life and now, you'll be able to have a good influence on the young guys.
ReplyDeleteThat must be a great experience! I made a lot of my friends in middle school when I was in track and in soccer. I am still their friends to this day. I like your passion for baseball!
ReplyDeleteEven though you decided on academics over baseball, being a coach you are going to be a positive role model for younger kids. The fact that you played baseball for so long the kids will have respect for you.
ReplyDeleteReading over your story, I think your choice was a wise and probably hard decision to choose. Your peers will respect your choice and enjoy the time you spend teaching them how to achieve their goals.
ReplyDeleteI've never really been into any kind of sport. I've tried to find something that interested me but some people are just not athletic. I'm glad at a young age you've found something that you love to do as a job/career. It's been a long road for me and I'm only 20, I've had some real crappy jobs. Lol.
ReplyDeleteHow awesome that you have accomplished so much in your craft at such an early age. I can read your passion for the game and it comes through load and clear! And you made a great choice in choosing your education first, because an education will get you very far, and will actually compliment your baseball skill. Good luck to you, Coach.

Your love for the game is very apparent. If my husband has his way, our 2 year old will be doing the same!! What a great feeling to do what you love and teach it to others!

It seems as if whenever you quit something you love for all the right reasons that you always end up missing it the most. I'm glad that you found a way to bring baseball back into your life and that it is truly making you happy.
